Getting your voice heard
The best way to let legislators know what you are thinking is to tell them!
First, you will need to know the bill number. You can search for bills by topic, but it is more cumbersome. Once you have the bill number you can visit here.
Entering the bill number will take you to the bill page. On this page you can see the current status of the bill.
1. Here you can see the progress the bill has made.
2. Here you can see what actions have been taken and what the next steps may be.
3. Here is a list of documents that have been created in relation to the bill. It will include the Original Bill, any Revisions and bill analysis or reports created by staff.
If applicable, you can find the Fiscal Notes, Amendments and any available videos.
On the right side of the screen you will find Comment and notification options.

You can also sign up to get notifications about the bill. So, if there is a hearing, vote or other actions, you will get notified.

If you select “Send a comment….”, you will be taken to a screen that allows you to enter your name and address (this is used to automatically select the appropriate legislators). You will be able to weigh in “Support”, “Oppose” or “Neutral” on the bill. You will also be able to write in any comments. These comments will be forwarded to your legislators.
If you select “Sign Up to Testify…” you will be taken to the House Committee Sign In page. Here you will have the options to 1. Testify in person 2. Testify remotely 3. Have your position noted for the legislative record (Support, Oppose, Neutral) 4. Submit written testimony. |
The process of testifying seems more daunting than it really is. Legislators want to hear your thoughts and concerns about legislation they are reviewing. Whether your testimony is live or on zoom, it is still important to them.
