The City of Kennewick is currently seeking citizen feedback as the City works towards preparing the budget for the 2019-2020 biennium. The survey is just 7 questions and takes only a few minutes to complete. This is a great opportunity for our residents and businesses to let the City know what priorities are important to them.
Results from this survey will be used during upcoming budget workshops. It is anticipated that adoption of the 2019-2020 budget will be in November. A link to the Citizen Budget Survey is also available on the City of Kennewick’s web page at www.go2kennewick.com. The survey will be available through the end of June. Ben Franklin Transit (BFT) has launched two new demonstration bus routes in Kennewick and Pasco, effective June 18. The Summer River Runner will run until August 25, and Route 63D will run for approximately one year. During these time periods, ridership will be assessed for both routes to determine whether either or both will become permanent.
Route 63D will provide hourly service from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, between 22nd Avenue Transit Center and multiple destinations in East Pasco. It will travel east along Lewis St. until Wehe St. before going north to Ochoa Middle School, then southeast to Tierra Vida. The new route—the result of extensive analysis by the BFT Planning and Service Development team, a series of public meetings, and community survey input—will connect bus service to previously unserved areas in East Pasco, with convenient access to Ochoa Middle School, Marie Curie STEM and Whittier Elementary Schools, Fiesta Foods, Griggs, and more. The Summer River Runner is an hourly seasonal route that originates at Three Rivers Transit Center and runs the length of Columbia Park in Kennewick, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Served by trolley bus, the River Runner will travel from Three Rivers Transit Center to Columbia Park Trail, with stops at The REACH Museum and throughout the park to the Playground of Dreams, before looping back to Three Rivers for additional route connections. “People use public transportation for various reasons,” said BFT general manager Gloria Boyce. “For some, it’s their primary mode of travel. For others it’s about convenience or recreation, and some recognize its environmental benefits or come from larger metropolitan areas where riding the bus is more engrained in daily lifestyles. As a public agency, Ben Franklin Transit is committed to helping as many people as possible in our community make transportation connections that are meaningful to them. The launch of these two new routes reflects that commitment.” Those interested in trying out the new routes are encouraged to use BFT’s GPS-enabled trip-planning tool at https://MyRide.bft.org. BFT is also offering reduced seasonal youth bus fares including a Summer Youth Pass that gives students in grades K-12 unlimited rides through August 31 for $25 and a $1 day pass for all youth boarding BFT buses, with the option to trade in 25 youth day passes for a Summer Youth Pass. More info at www.bft.org/Summer. For more information about the new routes, visit www.bft.org/RiverRunner or www.bft.org/63D. For more information about Ben Franklin Transit, visit www.bft.org. Over 20 Boys & Girls Club Teens will pile into vans Monday morning, June 25th to spend the week visiting colleges and trade schools throughout the Pacific Northwest thanks to Numerica Credit Union.
For several years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton & Franklin Counties has been offering college tours during the summer months. It is one of the Boys & Girls Club teens’ favorite activities. “While all youth benefit from the tours, this is an especially exciting opportunity for our Club teens that come from very low-income areas. Most of these youth have an educational goal of simply completing high school. College Tours inspire members set goals, further their education and aspire for a future we know they are capable of,” states Brian Ace, Executive Director. Funding from Numerica means that even more local youth can have this opportunity. The Boys & Girls Club will be able to take over 40 teens to explore post-secondary options. These will be youth from all over the Mid-Columbia area, from Prosser to Pasco. For many Club youth, this opportunity offers the first step in thinking about college and career goals. Part of the college tour process is mentoring members to identify what type of college they would like to attend and providing assistance in searching for schools that meet those criteria. Touring colleges gives teens the opportunity to actually see and experience campus sizes and the various environments available to them. In addition to College Tours, the Numerica sponsorship will also fund a new vehicle for Boys & Girls Club’s teen programs. The new van will allow for monthly field trips focused on career exploration. Numerica representatives will present a check to Boys & Girls Club teens on Friday, June 15th at 11:30 am. The check presentation will take place at the Southridge Numerica Branch located at 4898 W. Hildebrand Blvd. in Kennewick. Media are invited to attend. Is the Tri-Cities ripe for a vibrant, year-round marketplace that serves both locals and tourists, in the same way that the iconic Pike Place Market in Seattle or the Pybus Market in Wenatchee delight thousands of patrons each year? That’s the question that a community survey put forward by the Port of Pasco, the City of Pasco and the Tri-Cities Public Market Foundation hopes to provide an answer to.
According to Port of Pasco Economic Development Manager Gary Ballew,”We recently completed a community wide economic vision for the Pasco area called Somos Pasco. We heard a lot of people say they wanted more things to do on the waterfront and Downtown Pasco. There were a lot of mentions of a Public Market specifically. This survey is the first step in a long process to see if we can make that happen.” The survey, which can be found at tricitiespublicmarket.com, resulted from a months-long collaboration during which the team examined not only community interest in the concept, but also the feasibility of two sites: the downtown area near the existing Farmer’s Market and a new, former industrial site along the Columbia River-front, east of the Cable Bridge. It is open from June 11, 2018 to July 8, 2018. The survey is part of a larger study looking at the feasibility of a public market in Pasco that is jointly funded by the City of Pasco and the Port of Pasco. Pasco City Council member and liaison Craig Maloney pointed out, “So many people in Pasco have shown their pride in our community, which bodes well for businesses, for residents and for the entire Tri-Cities. We think the Public Market is a visionary concept that Pasco, and our region, are ready for.” Community members have been critical in evaluating options. “The City of Pasco is growing at a blistering pace and evolving as it grows. We are diverse by design and welcoming by nature. Our community is craving creative outlets to express ourselves. And I believe that the Tri Cities Public Market will offer unique opportunities for small business enterprises to show off the best of what we've got! This could be a catalyst to reinvigorate an area of Pasco we all know has enormous potential,” said Ramiro Alvarez, Pasco resident and Co-founder of BlackBox Media PR. The Tri-Cities Public Market Survey is multiple choice and ratings and should take most respondents less than five minutes to complete. Tri-Cities Public Market Foundation volunteers, identified by t-shirts, will be canvassing at local community events such as Pasco’s Food Truck Fridays and the June 23rd Juneteenth Celebrations at Kurtzman Park in Pasco. If community members would like to volunteer, please contact the Tri-Cities Public Market Foundation at https://www.facebook.com/tricitiespublicmarket. ### About the Tri-Cities Public Market Foundation Tri-Cities Public Market Foundation was created with the following purposes: to act in the best interest of the public and lessen the burdens of government by successfully developing, funding, promoting, and operating a community wide public market which will: • provide education and opportunities for new businesses and community members, • serve residents' everyday shopping needs for fresh and prepared food, fine local, handmade crafts, entertainment, • increase visitation to the area, and • represent the unique character and culture of the Tri-Cities region Board members of the Tri Cities Public Market Foundation are Ron Boninger, Tanya Bowers, Adam Brault, Mark Brault, Jillian Cadwell, Amanda Divine, Jennifer Johnson, Mark Lee, Craig Maloney, Ana Ruiz Peralta, Brad Rew, and Heather Unwin.
