Lourdes Health is pleased to announce that Jessica Leon, a Registered Nurse in the Lourdes Emergency Department, has been named as a recent recipient for The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses at Lourdes Health. “Jessica is well-deserving of this honor,” said Kena Chase, Lourdes Chief Nursing Officer. “She is a great example to all of her co-workers and strives to treat her patients and their families with respect, dignity, and kindness.” Jessica was nominated by a Lourdes RN on the medical surgical unit, who noticed how Jessica had handled a patient in the dying phase of their life as well as helping the family to understand what was happening. They noted her ability to provide insightful information to the patient and their family, without putting her own emotions into play. The staff member who nominated Jessica wrote, “The patient had several family members by her side with lots of questions and concerns. Jessica took the time to address each one. I watched her treat the patient with respect and compassion. When the patient passed onward, Jessica consoled them and then needed a hug herself. Losing patients, whether expected or not, is very hard on nurses. Jessica handled the situation very professionally and then took a minute for herself.” Nancy Yzaguirre, BSN, RN, Director of Emergency & Respiratory Services and Jessica’s supervisor said, “Jessica is a dedicated nurse and is loved by her co-workers as well as patients because she takes care of them like her own family.” The DAISY Award® is an international program started in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, whose family experienced first-hand the difference his nurses made in his care through clinical excellence and compassionate care. The family created The DAISY Award® to express gratitude to nurses and to enable other patients, families, and staff to thank and honor their special nurses.
