"BBB Shred Day is a time for the community to take a proactive step in keeping their personal information safe,” said Tyler Andrew, BBB Northwest + Pacific CEO. “The threat of identity theft is real. Properly disposing of confidential documents is a great step toward being protected."
Each person can bring up to two bags or boxes of personal documents to be disposed.
Here’s a reminder of what’s recommended to keep and what to shred throughout the years:
- Keep for one year: bank statements, paid and undisputed bills, pay stubs
- Keep for seven years: tax-related receipts, tax-related canceled checks, W-2s
- Keep permanently: deeds, mortgages, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, birth certificates, tax returns, wills
BBB staff will be on site offering tips on how consumers can protect themselves from identity theft. This includes information about how consumers can protect their digital identity, and how understanding cyber security threats help to keep all personally identifiable information safe.
