We asked past ATHENA Award recipients for their favorite inspirational quotes, podcasts, books, and more to help motivate you through 2021. Words of Wisdom The women whom I love and admire for their strength and grace did not get that way because shit worked out. They got that way because shit went wrong, and they handled it. They handled it in a thousand different ways on a thousand different days, but they handled it. Those women are my superheroes." - Elizabeth Gilbert Let’s face it ladies, none of us got where we are today taking the path of least resistance. We have all walked a long, hard and sometimes messy road that has at times felt unbearable. We have all faced adversity, wanted to give up and have felt defeated, but it is our “Perseverance” that has kept us in the fight. As women, we certainly know life is full of storms, some of which could certainly send us in a full retreat if we allowed. But we don’t! We keep showing up! We keep pushing through! We find our inner strength and refuse to give up and we do so with strength and grace. I have kept this quote nearby for years as a reminder that no storm is stronger than that of a passionate and driven woman on a mission to do what is right for the right reason. You ladies are my Superheroes! Athena Clark is an officer for the West Richland Police Department.

2021 Goals
My goal for January is to get my life back on track by doing Dry January, Weight Watchers, and short 7-15 minute exercises. To help me be accountable, I decided to share my “Live Your Best Life” 4-week course for free! Here’s the recording: http://mailchi.mp/peggyvasquez.net/bestyearyet-session-1 - It runs every Tuesday in January from 12:00-1:00 pm PT.

I not only love this quote by Ruth Bader Ginsburg but I try my best to live by it: "I tell law students… if you are going to be a lawyer and just practice your profession, you have a skill—very much like a plumber. But if you want to be a true professional, you will do something outside yourself… something that makes life a little better for people less fortunate than you." Book Recommendation I love reading business books, especially the ones geared towards running a law practice, but my all-time favorite is The E-myth Attorney since it explains how to create effective structures in one’s law office. Note: This is an Amazon Affiliate link - purchasing this item through this link supports the Regional Chamber Podcast Recommendation My favorite podcast now is Crushing Chaos in Law Firms. Allison Williams, who is an attorney with her own very successful law firm, goes deep into explaining the psychology of why certain things should be done certain ways in your law office. She is pretty cool, and I think every attorney should listen to her podcast. Tips on Keeping Motivated in 2021 I am looking forward to all my future travels and camping trips!

I am a firm believer that your success is based on your relationships. Business partners have to feel that you are ethical, honest and trustworthy. When you don’t know the answer, say so, do the research and follow up. It takes a long time to build trust, but it quickly fades when you give misinformation. Book Recommendation I was honored to attend a Harvard Executive Leadership program with some great authors. Everything in your career and life requires negotiation. One of the best books is Getting to yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In (Penguin, 3rd edition, 2011). Roger Fisher, William Urey, and Bruce Patton. It addresses six 6 skills that are critical to implement when working toward a common solution. It’s an easy read packed with great tips! “Aut inveniam viam aut faciam” is Latin for “I shall either find a way or make one.” It may often feel that people tell you what you can’t do or who you can’t be. As long as it’s not unlawful, illegal, or immoral; set your goals, stay the course, and find your way. You and those around you will be better for it! Book Recommendation My days are consumed with COVID-19 reading, but I have a book waiting for my next vacation, No Time for Spectators: The Lessons That Mattered Most From West Point To The West Wing by Martin Dempsey. First of all he is a West Point grad, so you can’t go wrong there! I’m told that the book discusses why the best leaders are most adept at following, what is expected of those who have the privilege of leading, and what may leaders expect of those who follow them. These are all areas that I’m interested in understanding the author’s view point as I have great respect for him. Note: This is an Amazon Affiliate link - purchasing this item through this link supports the Regional Chamber Tips on Keeping Motivated in 2021 I thrive under stress and in challenging situations, so being part of the COVID response is right up my alley. I’ve seen increased partnership between the different organizations at work, we are tearing down stovepipes. With the inclusion of teleworking into the work schedule the need to reach out to people has exponentially increased with positive results. Motivation is an innate part of who I am, but seeing people come together for good and helping others pumps me up that much more. The military saying “Mission, Men, Me” drives me. What does it take to accomplish the mission at hand, are my teammates empowered (what do they need, what obstacles can I help remove), and then me. It’s all about the people. Everyone comes with a different perspective and life experience. There is usually no singular way to do something, it’s taken me years to learn this and then put it into action. My current boss told me; “Katie, there is nothing you can mess up that I can’t unmess, keep me informed so I’m not caught off-guard, go handle business.” He trusts me! When I’ve in turn said this to the manager under me it’s allowed for a whole new relationship to develop. This single statement has allowed the department to exceed mission expectations and grow the team. Finally, in all things the Glory belongs to God. I’m grateful to have a personal relationship with Him and have seen His work in me impact those around me for good.

Book Recommendations
The Perfection Detox by Petra Kolber - I’ve read the first two chapters and have found some helpful hints to recognize and reboot yourself out of negative self-treatment. Paint Yourself Positive by Jean Haines - This book teaches you to play with water colors. You only need three colors and two brushes and water color paper to start playing. I found that getting lost in learning how the water and the colors morphed was very relaxing and freed my mind from the stresses of the daily news and COVID restrictions. If anyone has at any point in their life been artistic, this is a very kind re-entry. The author recommends that you leave your inner judge aside and just play to enjoy. Words of Wisdom
Growing up I remember my dad saying something over and over again throughout my years. When asked a question or to relate an incident, he always said, “Your word is your honor.” It’s stuck with me all these years. Still applies to today’s environment… in fact, even more so. When I was an Honored Queen with the Jobs Daughters organization, we had a mantra, “Patience, Faith, and Reward.” It related to the Book of Job, in the Bible. I still apply it to things I do and say. There are so many quotes and words of wisdom out there… particularly on Facebook and social media in general. While these are appreciated and apply to certain situations, I find that it’s the “tried and true” words of wisdom that have followed me throughout my life that rise to the top. Book Recommendations I love fiction. I love where it takes me, so these are all fiction recommendations: Note: These are Amazon Affiliate links - purchasing these items through these links supports the Regional Chamber

Brene Brown’s On My Mind podcast, “On Words, Actions, Dehumanization and Accountability.” Tips on Keeping Motivated in 2021
Other Tips Working hard has come easy for me, along with a dedicated work ethic: Always on time, Prepared, Articulate, and Wise. Those are the elements I worked toward throughout my career. Reaching the mountain top was always my goal. To be the best of what I could be, consistently. Having reached the top of my mountain I sought to climb, it’s the backside of the mountain that culminates the rewards that have been sewn. I love my life. I’m breathing in every smell, seeing every flower, and watching clouds glide against a blue sky. It feels like all I’ve accomplished has presented to me a gift of awareness I never knew existed. I don’t have to go far to realize what I have in hand. Another impression and realization about being on the backside of my mountain is the love I have for my spouse. It occurs to me now, more than ever, all the support, love and commitment he’s bestowed to me over my ever-so-aggressive career path and years of community support, are recognized and appreciated. It’s his time to be cherished and loved by me in a way I’ve never provided before. I do it willingly and lovingly with all my heart. So, my message to other women who are reaching for the top of their mountain, is to love every moment of the climb and remember the backside of the mountain can be just as rewarding and valued.
