Words of Wisdom The women whom I love and admire for their strength and grace did not get that way because shit worked out. They got that way because shit went wrong, and they handled it. They handled it in a thousand different ways on a thousand different days, but they handled it. Those women are my superheroes." - Elizabeth Gilbert Let’s face it ladies, none of us got where we are today taking the path of least resistance. We have all walked a long, hard and sometimes messy road that has at times felt unbearable. We have all faced adversity, wanted to give up and have felt defeated, but it is our “Perseverance” that has kept us in the fight. As women, we certainly know life is full of storms, some of which could certainly send us in a full retreat if we allowed. But we don’t! We keep showing up! We keep pushing through! We find our inner strength and refuse to give up and we do so with strength and grace. I have kept this quote nearby for years as a reminder that no storm is stronger than that of a passionate and driven woman on a mission to do what is right for the right reason. You ladies are my Superheroes! Athena Clark is an officer for the West Richland Police Department.

I not only love this quote by Ruth Bader Ginsburg but I try my best to live by it: "I tell law students… if you are going to be a lawyer and just practice your profession, you have a skill—very much like a plumber. But if you want to be a true professional, you will do something outside yourself… something that makes life a little better for people less fortunate than you." Book Recommendation I love reading business books, especially the ones geared towards running a law practice, but my all-time favorite is The E-myth Attorney since it explains how to create effective structures in one’s law office. Note: This is an Amazon Affiliate link - purchasing this item through this link supports the Regional Chamber Podcast Recommendation My favorite podcast now is Crushing Chaos in Law Firms. Allison Williams, who is an attorney with her own very successful law firm, goes deep into explaining the psychology of why certain things should be done certain ways in your law office. She is pretty cool, and I think every attorney should listen to her podcast. Tips on Keeping Motivated in 2021 I am looking forward to all my future travels and camping trips!

“Aut inveniam viam aut faciam” is Latin for “I shall either find a way or make one.” It may often feel that people tell you what you can’t do or who you can’t be. As long as it’s not unlawful, illegal, or immoral; set your goals, stay the course, and find your way. You and those around you will be better for it! Book Recommendation My days are consumed with COVID-19 reading, but I have a book waiting for my next vacation, No Time for Spectators: The Lessons That Mattered Most From West Point To The West Wing by Martin Dempsey. First of all he is a West Point grad, so you can’t go wrong there! I’m told that the book discusses why the best leaders are most adept at following, what is expected of those who have the privilege of leading, and what may leaders expect of those who follow them. These are all areas that I’m interested in understanding the author’s view point as I have great respect for him. Note: This is an Amazon Affiliate link - purchasing this item through this link supports the Regional Chamber Tips on Keeping Motivated in 2021 I thrive under stress and in challenging situations, so being part of the COVID response is right up my alley. I’ve seen increased partnership between the different organizations at work, we are tearing down stovepipes. With the inclusion of teleworking into the work schedule the need to reach out to people has exponentially increased with positive results. Motivation is an innate part of who I am, but seeing people come together for good and helping others pumps me up that much more. The military saying “Mission, Men, Me” drives me. What does it take to accomplish the mission at hand, are my teammates empowered (what do they need, what obstacles can I help remove), and then me. It’s all about the people. Everyone comes with a different perspective and life experience. There is usually no singular way to do something, it’s taken me years to learn this and then put it into action. My current boss told me; “Katie, there is nothing you can mess up that I can’t unmess, keep me informed so I’m not caught off-guard, go handle business.” He trusts me! When I’ve in turn said this to the manager under me it’s allowed for a whole new relationship to develop. This single statement has allowed the department to exceed mission expectations and grow the team. Finally, in all things the Glory belongs to God. I’m grateful to have a personal relationship with Him and have seen His work in me impact those around me for good.

My motto the past year has been to “Live my life, not to simply exist in my life”. I have made several significant changes as a result. While many of these changes have been extremely challenging, I’m determined to live my best life and be the best example I can be to my children. Book Recommendation Die Empty by Todd Henry - It opens with a quote: “Alas for those that never sing, but die with all their music in them” - Oliver Wendell Holmes. It’s about unleashing your best self everyday. While the emphasis is on your work life, it resonates in your personal life as well. Do what you love, give your all and don’t wait. Knock those items off your bucket list. Life is short and there are no guarantees. Take that trip, get that degree, end that toxic relationship, challenge yourself. Live.

Tips on Keeping Motivated in 2021 I try my best to see the blessings despite the challenges of the past year. Reconnecting with family and friends. Slowing down. I have been able to enjoy my home, bake, and appreciate fresh air and the outdoors. Other Tips I have had to learn to accept and even ask for help. Friends and family are eager to provide service in times of distress or trials. Swallow your pride and allow your tribe to support you and help you recover. Then you can pay it forward and provide that same service to others.
